Oxidation, explained

Why wax alone does not fix a faded RV.

Oxidation is the gel coat itself breaking down. It has to come off before anything can go on.

What is RV oxidation?

Gel coat is a pigmented resin. UV breaks down its surface over time — first it dulls, then it goes chalky, and eventually it leaves white residue on your hand. Red and dark graphics show it first.

At 6,035 feet, on a rig that sits outside for months, that process runs faster than at sea level.

Which level does my RV need?

Rub a clean finger on the side. If it comes away clean and the finish still reflects, wash and wax is enough. If it looks dull but your finger stays clean, polish and wax. If your finger comes away white, it needs the full cut, polish and wax.

We confirm it on the rig before anything is booked, so you are never paying for a level you did not need.

Do you do the roof and the black streaks?

Yes. Black streaks are dirt and residue running off the roof and seams, so the roof gets cleaned as part of the job rather than the streaks being wiped off the sides and left to come back.

Decals and vinyl graphics are handled carefully — they get UV protection rather than being polished through.

Gtechniq Accredited Installer

Same standard. Bigger surface.

17+ years · professionally trained · Gtechniq accredited

Gel coat, fibreglass and painted aluminium oxidise faster at altitude, and an RV spends months parked in the sun. The correction and coating standard Gtechniq accreditation requires is the one applied to every rig.

RVs are a surface-area problem. The process is the same one we use on paint, scaled up.

Years in the trade

Seventeen-plus years of professional detailing. Reading a surface before touching it is the part of the job that experience buys, and it decides every step after it.

In the shop or on site

In the shop at 2725 N Nevada Ave when it fits through the door; otherwise we bring the equipment to your driveway, storage lot or slip.

Gel coat corrected first

Coating or sealing over chalky gel coat locks the dullness in. Oxidation comes off first, on every job.

Where we work

RV polishing across El Paso County.

RVs are worked on at 2725 N Nevada Ave when they fit, and on site when they do not.

RV detailing, motorhome detailing, camper cleaning and RV oxidation removal are all the same trade: a very large gel coat or painted surface, a roof that takes the worst of the weather, and an interior that has to be reset between trips. We work on Class A, B and C motorhomes, fifth-wheels, travel trailers, toy haulers and camper vans.

Colorado is hard on an RV in a specific way. At 6,035 feet the UV load is higher than at sea level, and a rig stored outside between trips takes that sun for months. Oxidation shows up as chalk on your hand.

Tell us the length, the type and where it is parked, and send a few photos. You get a real starting number before anything is booked.

RV polishing questions

The things people actually ask.

Answered straight. If yours is not here, call the shop and ask.

01How much does RV polishing cost?

Wash and wax is $300–$750, polish and wax is $540–$1,350, and cut, polish and wax is $880–$2,200, depending on the length of the RV. Heavy oxidation found on the day can adjust the final quote.

02How do I know if my RV is oxidised?

Rub a clean finger along the side. If it comes away white, the gel coat is oxidised and needs the cut, polish and wax. If it is dull but your finger stays clean, polish and wax is usually enough.

03Can oxidised gel coat be restored?

In most cases, yes. Compounding and polishing remove the oxidised surface layer and bring the colour and gloss back. Gel coat that has worn through to the fibreglass cannot be polished back.

04Do you polish the RV on site?

Yes, or in the shop if it fits. Larger motorhomes and fifth-wheels are done at your driveway or storage lot.

05How long does RV polishing last?

Wax needs renewing, especially on a rig parked outside. For protection that lasts years rather than months, the corrected gel coat can be ceramic coated.
