How boat detailing works

The hull, the waterline and the cockpit.

A boat takes sun, water and minerals all at once, and each surface needs its own treatment.

Why does a boat hull go chalky?

Gel coat breaks down under UV, and on the water it gets it from above and reflected off the surface. It dulls first, then turns to chalk that comes off on your hand. Dark hulls show it fastest.

Polishing takes the oxidised layer off and brings the colour back. How much it takes depends on how far it has gone, which is what the three exterior tiers are for.

What about the waterline?

The scum line is mineral and algae residue bonded to the gel coat, and it does not come off with soap. It gets its own treatment on every exterior tier.

Non-skid decking is scrubbed properly rather than skimmed over, because that texture is where dirt and sunscreen collect.

In the shop or at the water?

Both. Trailered boats can come into the shop at 2725 N Nevada Ave. Boats on a lift or in a slip, or too big to tow in, are done where they are.

Tell us where it is when you ask for a quote. The per-foot price does not change.

Years in the trade

Seventeen-plus years of professional detailing. Reading a surface before touching it is the part of the job that experience buys, and it decides every step after it.

In the shop or at the slip

In the shop at 2725 N Nevada Ave on the trailer when it fits; otherwise at your slip, storage lot or driveway.

Gel coat corrected first

Coating or sealing over chalky gel coat locks the dullness in. Oxidation comes off first, on every job.

You know who is working on it

A local, family-run shop — Dana Starr, his two sons and a crew he has worked with for years. Licensed, insured and bonded. The same people quote the job and do the job.

Where we work

Boat detailing across El Paso County.

Boats come into the shop on the trailer, or we come to the slip, the storage lot or the driveway.

Boat detailing, marine detailing, hull cleaning and gel coat oxidation removal cover the same work: a hull that sits in water and sun, a waterline that collects scum, and an interior that takes sunscreen, spills and damp. We work on wake and ski boats, bowriders, pontoons and fishing boats.

Front Range boating is high-altitude boating. The sun is harder on gel coat and vinyl at elevation, and a season on Lake Pueblo, Rampart or a mountain reservoir shows up as chalky hull sides and faded seats.

Tell us the length, the hull and where the boat is, and send a few photos. You get a real starting number before anything is booked.
