Does paint protection film come with a warranty?
Yes. 3M warrant Scotchgard Pro Series film for ten years from the date of purchase against defects in materials and manufacture, and they name the three failures people actually worry about: yellowing, bubbling and cracking. It covers vehicle owners in the US and Canada, and it is transferable if you hand the next owner the original paperwork. What it does not cover is impact damage — a stone that dents the film is the film doing its job, not the film failing.

This is a materials warranty. It is about the film staying clear and staying stuck, not about what hits it.

- Anything that is really a paint problem underneath the film
Worth knowing before you sell
This one transfers.
It is the opposite of the coating guarantee, and it changes the maths on a full-vehicle job.
3M’s warranty moves to the next owner as long as they have the original paint protection film warranty paperwork. Keep it with the service records and it goes with the car.
That matters at the top of the ladder. A full vehicle starts at $5,000, and the usual objection is that you will not own the car for ten years. With film you do not have to — the remaining cover is part of what you are selling, and a documented full-body wrap with transferable warranty is a line in the advert rather than a cost you wrote off.
Compare that with the Gtechniq coating guarantee, which is non-transferable and stays with the original purchaser. Two products, two very different answers to the same question.
Keeping it valid
Three things, and none of them are hard.
3M’s own care guidance. Follow it and there is nothing for a claim to catch on.
Wait a week before washing
3M ask for one week after installation before you wash or wax, so the film’s adhesion has fully built. It is the one instruction people get wrong, and it is the easiest to follow.
Wax without abrasives
Use a wax with no dyes, no abrasive polishes and no rubbing compounds. Dyed waxes stain film edges and abrasives dull the top layer that does the self-healing.
Clean the edges
Wax builds up along the film edge. Wipe it off with a lint-free cloth after waxing — it is what makes an edge start to look grubby a year in.
Keep the paperwork
The warranty is transferable only with the original documentation. Keep it with the service records, not in a drawer.
If the film fails
Bring it here first.
Yellowing, bubbling or cracking inside the term is a 3M matter, and the remedy is that the old film comes off and new film goes on. Call the shop and bring the vehicle in — we installed it, we have the record, and we would rather look at it than have you try to describe it over the phone.

The film is the easy part. The hands are not.
Every vehicle in this shop is wrapped by the owner, or by someone he trained himself. No rotating bench, no subcontractor.
A claim does not start with 3M. It starts with the shop that fitted the film.

We keep the paperwork on file for the same reason. If you sell the car and the buyer wants the remaining cover, the record is here — which is the whole point of a warranty that transfers.

Colorado is what the film is up against. I-25 and Powers throw gravel year round, the winter sanding makes it worse, and at 6,035 feet the UV load is higher than at sea level. Those are the conditions 3M’s ten-year cover runs through.

What voids the paint protection film warranty?

Beyond that, follow 3M’s care guidance: wait a week after installation before washing or waxing, and use waxes without dyes, abrasive polishes or rubbing compounds.
How do I claim on the 3M film warranty?

How long before I can wash a car with new film?
