Is a cheap online ceramic coating worth it?

We get asked this a lot. Short version: how a coating turns out depends mostly on the prep, not the bottle. Here’s what the price difference pays for.

Short Answer

What’s the difference between a $40 bottle and an install?

They aren’t the same product at two prices. A lot of the cheap “ceramic” products online are spray sealants. They look great for a few months. With an installed Gtechniq coating, the paint gets decontaminated and corrected first, the coating is levelled by hand, and the install is registered. Most of what you pay for is that prep.

Where we stand

We think Gtechniq is the best coating out there. It’s the only one we install. But we’d rather you decide with real information, whether you hire us or do it yourself.

The Price Difference

What does the price actually buy?

Three things a bottle can’t give you: the prep and hand levelling, coatings only accredited installers can buy, and a registered record with a guarantee.

Prep and hand levelling

Decon, clay and correction come first, then the coating is levelled panel by panel. That’s most of the result. Even new cars need it.

Products you can’t buy

Reading The Bottle

Sealant or coating? Read the label.

Check six things before you buy anything that says “ceramic”: how it goes on, how long it really lasts, whether it asks for prep, its cure instructions, who stands behind it and who’s allowed to buy it.

Spray-on or wipe-on?Spray-and-wipe products are usually sealants. Real coatings go on with an applicator and get levelled.
How long, really?Look for durability stated in months or years, and what conditions it assumes.
Does it ask for prep?A real coating tells you to decon, polish and panel wipe first. If it says “just spray on a clean car,” it’s a topper.
Cure instructionsCoatings list a cure time and conditions. No cure time usually means no real coating.
Who stands behind it?Is there a registered guarantee, or just a claim on the box?
Who’s allowed to buy it?The strongest professional coatings aren’t sold to the public at all.
Where Sprays Belong

When is a spray product the right call?

When you’re topping up an existing coating, or treating wheels and glass. Sprays are a maintenance tool, not a substitute for a coating.

Topping up a coating

A compatible topper between washes keeps the beading strong. Maintenance handles the rest.

FAQ

What else do people ask about coating brands?

Still unsure? Call (719) 517-7220, open 7 days.

Are cheap ceramic coatings from Amazon worth it?

Some are decent spray sealants that last months, which is fine for what they are. The problem is when they’re sold as years of protection. Durability depends on the product and, even more, on the prep under it, which no bottle does for you.

Why is a professional ceramic coating so much more expensive?

You’re paying for decon, clay and paint correction before anything goes on, a coating that may only be sold to accredited installers, the labor to level it panel by panel, and a registered record. At ST6 the correction is included: 3-Year from $899, 5-Year $1,099, 9-Year $1,599.

Can I buy Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra myself?

No. Gtechniq releases Crystal Serum Ultra to accredited detailers only. Their reason: applied incorrectly, it can only be removed by wet sanding the paint.

What does Gtechniq accredited mean?

It means Gtechniq has approved the shop to install its professional coatings. That access is what makes products like Crystal Serum Ultra and its nine-year manufacturer guarantee available at all.

Can I put a cheap coating on now and a pro coating later?

Yes, but the old coating or sealant has to come off first, which means decon and polishing before the new coating can bond to bare paint.

Is DIY ceramic coating a bad idea?

No. Plenty of people do it well. Do the prep properly, coat in the shade on cool panels, and respect the cure time. Our paint correction guide covers the prep step by step.

Bring it to the shop. We will tell you what it actually needs.

No deposit to book. You pay after the work is finished and you have looked at it.
