Short answer

When can I wash my ceramic coated car?

Keep it dry for the first 12 hours — that is Gtechniq’s cure window, and it is the same for all three coatings we install. Wait 24 hours before the first proper wash. From then on, wash it every four to six weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo and a wash mitt. A coated car does not want washing more often than an uncoated one. It wants washing less.

  • Keep it dry12 hours
  • First proper wash24 hours
  • Then wash every4–6 weeks

Day one

The first twenty-four hours do the most work.

A coating goes on liquid and cross-links into a hard layer. That reaction is mostly finished when you drive away, but not entirely. Nothing you do on day one will ruin it — you just get a better result by leaving it alone.

0–12 hours

Keep it dry

Gtechniq’s instruction for EXO v5, Crystal Serum Light and Crystal Serum Ultra is the same: allow the coating to cure for 12 hours before you get it wet. Park it inside if you have a garage. If the forecast is bad on collection day, tell us and we will keep it here overnight rather than hand it back into a storm.

12–24 hours

Rain is fine. Washing is not.

Once the twelve hours are up, weather stops being a problem and you can drive it normally. Just keep the mitt, the pressure washer and the drive-through away for now, and deal with bird droppings by rinsing and blotting rather than scrubbing.

24 hours on

First proper wash

After a full day it is ready for a real wash. pH-neutral shampoo, a clean mitt, and dry it with a plush microfibre towel instead of letting it air-dry. Our water is hard enough here that spotting, not wear, is what makes a good coating start to look average.

Method

How to wash a coated car without undoing it.

A ceramic coating is measured in microns. It is far harder than your clear coat, but it is not armour against a dirty sponge. Most coatings that look tired at year three were washed badly, not worn out.

pH-neutral shampoo

Not dish soap, not a wash-and-wax, and nothing sold as a degreaser. Gtechniq’s own maintenance range is tested for 100 wash cycles on EXO, C1 Crystal Lacquer, Crystal Serum Light, Crystal Serum Ultra and Platinum without damage to the coatings.

Mitt, and two buckets

One bucket of shampoo, one of clean rinse water, and the mitt goes back into the rinse bucket between panels. That one habit is the difference between a coating still looking wet at year five and one covered in fine swirls by year two.

Top down, wheels last

Wheels and lower rockers carry brake dust and mag chloride. Do them last, with a separate mitt, so that grit never gets near the paint.

Dry it, do not let it dry

A plush microfibre drying towel, or filtered air. Colorado water leaves mineral deposits as it evaporates, and spots baked on in the sun are the one thing that does need a machine to remove.

Frequency

Every four to six weeks. Not weekly.

This is the part most people have backwards. Having paid for protection, the instinct is to wash more.

Gtechniq’s guidance runs the other way: washing your car every four to six weeks once it has been coated is the best option.

Their reasoning is the same reason we correct paint before coating it. The coating is only microns thick, and the more you wash, the more likely you are to introduce light marring — especially on softer paint. Every wash carries a small risk. A coating earns its money by making the car dirty more slowly, because water and road film are thrown off instead of sticking, so you take fewer of those risks per year rather than more.

Between washes, a rinse with a hose carries no risk at all and does most of the work. The hydrophobics mean a coated car sheds a surprising amount with plain water and no contact.

Leave these alone

Four things that shorten a coating’s life.

None of these will destroy a coating overnight. All four will cost you years of it.

Wax or sealant on top

There is nothing to gain. Wax sits on the coating, changes how water behaves on it and washes off within weeks — and people then judge the coating by what the wax is doing. If you want more gloss and stronger beading over Crystal Serum Light, the right answer is a Gtechniq top coat such as EXO, not a carnauba.

Brush-style automatic washes

A soft-cloth tunnel is the fastest way to put swirls into any finish, coated or not. Touchless is survivable when there is no other option, but the chemistry they run is aggressive and no coating is designed around weekly exposure to it.

Letting contamination sit

Bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap are acidic. A coating buys you time — hours and days instead of minutes — but it does not make them harmless. Rinse them off when you notice them.

Skipping the yearly look

Coatings do not fail all at once. They thin at the leading edges first — hood, mirrors, front bumper — where the vehicle meets the weather. Once a year, someone who knows what they are looking at should check those panels.

Or hand it to us

A decontamination wash, the coating checked panel by panel, and a Gtechniq top-up where it has thinned. It is what keeps a nine-year coating on track to actually reach nine years.

3M · book it in the same visit

The coating handles gloss. 3M handles the rest.

Both are 3M product, both are quoted and priced separately — we never roll them into one number. Doing them in the same visit saves a second drop-off, and the car only has to be stripped and prepped once.

Paint Protection Film

A coating will not stop a rock. I-25 and Powers throw gravel year round, and chips on a hood are not bad luck here — they are the forecast. Film is the only thing that takes the impact, and it goes under the coating so you keep the gloss on top of it.

At 6,035 feet the UV load is materially higher than at sea level, and it works on your interior the same way it works on paint. Tint is what keeps a dashboard from going grey and a cabin from cooking in the Colorado sun.

How long after a ceramic coating can I wash my car?

Wait 24 hours before the first proper wash. For the first 12 hours keep it dry altogether — that is Gtechniq’s cure window, and it is the same for EXO v5, Crystal Serum Light and Crystal Serum Ultra. Between 12 and 24 hours rain is no longer a problem; you simply do not wash it yet.

Can my ceramic coated car get rained on?

After the first 12 hours, yes, with no special precautions. Inside that first 12 hours keep it dry. If the forecast is bad on the day you are due to collect it, tell us and we will keep it at the shop overnight instead.

How often should I wash a ceramic coated car?

Every four to six weeks. That is Gtechniq’s own guidance, and the reason is that the coating is only microns thick — the more you wash, the more likely you are to introduce light marring, especially on softer paint. A coated car also gets dirty more slowly, so it needs washing less often than it did before, not more.

What should I wash a ceramic coated car with?

A pH-neutral shampoo and a clean wash mitt, using two buckets so grit goes back into the rinse water rather than onto the paint. Gtechniq’s maintenance range is tested for 100 wash cycles on EXO, C1 Crystal Lacquer, Crystal Serum Light, Crystal Serum Ultra and Platinum without damaging the coatings. Avoid dish soap, wash-and-wax products and anything sold as a degreaser.

Can I put wax on top of a ceramic coating?

There is no reason to. Wax sits on top of the coating, changes how water behaves on it and washes off within weeks, and people then judge the coating by what the wax is doing. If you want more gloss and stronger beading over Crystal Serum Light, the right answer is a Gtechniq top coat such as EXO, not a carnauba.

Does washing it wrong affect the Gtechniq guarantee?

Maintenance is a condition of the guarantee, so it matters. Gtechniq put it plainly: a car that is looked after well and washed using Gtechniq shampoos and accessories will easily reach the nine-year Crystal Serum Ultra guarantee.
