The short answer

Nobody’s 3M windshield film is a 3M product.

3M does not make a windshield protection film. We’re a 3M authorized installer, we have the catalog, and it isn’t in there.

3M’s Scotchgard Pro Series paint protection film is a genuinely excellent product — 7.9 mil, self-healing, a 10-year warranty — and 3M’s own published product bulletin lists exactly one approved substrate for it: OEM painted surfaces. Not glass. Not lamp lenses. Painted panels.

So when a shop sells you “3M windshield film,” one of two things is happening. They’re putting paint film on glass outside what the manufacturer rates it for, with no warranty that covers the application. Or they’re using somebody else’s windshield film and borrowing the 3M name because it sells better.

We do neither. The film we put on your windshield is engineered for glass by a company that makes windshield film and nothing else, and we’ll name it on the invoice.

We could have just said “3M windshield film” on this page. It would rank. The reason we didn’t is the same reason we tell you when a chip shouldn’t be repaired: you can check, and if you check and we lied, everything else we told you is worthless.

How it works

Five layers, and only one of them is replaceable.

How windshield protection film works – cross-section of a laminated windshield with protection film applied A laminated windshield is two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. Protection film adds a sacrificial fourth layer on the outside that absorbs stone strikes before they reach the glass. WHAT THE FILM ACTUALLY DOES A laminated windshield is already four layers. Film makes it five — and the fifth one is the only one you can replace. WITHOUT FILM glass PVB glass The stone hits the glass. A bullseye or star break opens in the outer layer, and glass does not heal. From here it is a $60 repair — or a windshield. DAMAGE IS PERMANENT WITH PROTECTION FILM film glass PVB glass The film takes it instead. The energy spreads across a flexible layer bonded above the glass. The glass underneath stays whole, and the film is replaceable. GLASS UNTOUCHED · FILM REPLACED WHERE IT EARNS ITS MONEY FLAT, UPRIGHT GLASS Exotics and older supercars run nearly vertical windshields. They catch a stone square instead of glancing it off. GLASS YOU CAN’T JUST BUY When a replacement is weeks out and five figures, the film is not the expensive part of the decision. CAMERAS AND SENSORS A windshield with ADAS behind it means recalibration on every replacement. Keeping the original glass avoids that.
Your windshield is laminated — glass, a plastic interlayer, glass. Protection film adds a flexible outer layer that absorbs and spreads the impact instead of concentrating it into one point in the glass.

What you’re avoiding

This is what a stone does to bare glass.

Gravel on Colorado Springs asphalt - the source of windshield rock chips

01

The road supplies it

Traction grit on I-25, construction gravel on Powers, and the shoulder of every mountain pass. It’s not bad luck, it’s a volume problem.

02

Glass doesn’t heal

One strike, one permanent break. From there it’s a $60 repair if you catch it, or a windshield if you don’t.

03

Winter multiplies it

Sand and mag chloride get thrown up by every vehicle in front of you from November to April, at highway speed.

Who this is really for

Three situations where the math stops being close.

FLAT GLASS

Exotics and older supercars

Near-vertical windshields catch a stone square instead of glancing it off a steep rake. Owners of these cars already know — they’re the ones who call us having replaced the same windshield twice.

SPECIAL ORDER

Glass that isn’t on a shelf

When the replacement is a multi-week special order with a four or five figure invoice, a few hundred dollars of film is a rounding error on the decision.

ADAS

Cameras behind the glass

Lane keeping, adaptive cruise and automatic braking read through the windshield. Replace it and the system needs recalibration. Keep the original and that bill never arrives.

And a fourth, honestly: sometimes it’s not for you. If you pick up a chip every two or three years, a $60 repair when it happens beats paying up front for film you may not need. We’re not going to talk a daily-driver Corolla into a $499 install. Ask us and we’ll give you the real answer, which is occasionally “don’t.”

What you get

Installed here. By the people who do the glass.

Every piece of this happens at 2725 N Nevada Ave. Film work needs a clean, controlled, dust-free bay, and so does the chip repair we usually have to do first.

  • Cut To your vehicle, not trimmed by hand on the car
  • Sensors Rain sensor, camera and ADAS windows left clear
  • Prep Existing chips repaired to the ROLAGS standard before film goes on
  • Where In shop, North Nevada — glass work is never mobile here
  • After It comes off and gets replaced when it’s done its job

The reason to have one shop do this: film over an unrepaired chip locks the damage in. Most places installing windshield film can’t repair the chip, so they either film over it or send you somewhere else first. We’ve been doing auto glass since 1999 — the repair and the film are the same appointment.

Pricing

Published, because almost nobody else does.

$499Car, truck, SUV
$599Tesla 3 / Y / S
$899Model X · Cybertruck
$899Flat / exotic glass

We went looking for what this costs in Colorado Springs before we set a price. Of the shops here that offer windshield film, exactly one publishes a number. Everyone else wants you on the phone.

We’re more affordable than the shops around us, and that’s deliberate. We don’t build pricing around squeezing the maximum out of whoever walks in today. A windshield chip is a sixty-dollar job here, and film is priced the same way — at what it costs to do properly, plus a living.

Existing chip? It gets repaired first, at the normal $60, and then the film goes on. We’d rather charge you sixty dollars than seal a break under a new layer.

Questions

Windshield protection film in Colorado Springs, answered.

How much does windshield protection film cost in Colorado Springs?

$499 for most cars, trucks and SUVs. $599 for Teslas and oversized SUV glass. $899 for flat exotic glass, Model X, Cybertruck and anything needing a custom cut. Installed in shop at 2725 N Nevada Ave. The one local shop that publishes a price starts at $499 too — we’re not going to pretend we invented the number, we’re just not going to hide it like everybody else does.

Does windshield film actually stop rock chips?

It stops most of them, and that’s the honest version. Film is a sacrificial layer: a stone hits a flexible surface bonded above the glass, the energy spreads sideways instead of punching into a single point, and the glass underneath stays whole. A big enough rock at highway speed will still get through. What film reliably kills is the constant drip of small gravel strikes that turn into chips, and in Colorado that’s most of them.

Does 3M make a windshield protection film?

No. We’re a 3M authorized installer and we’ll tell you straight: 3M’s Scotchgard Pro Series film is rated for painted surfaces only — their own product bulletin says so — and 3M has no windshield film in the catalog at all. Anybody advertising “3M windshield protection film” is either using paint film somewhere it isn’t rated, or counting on you not checking. We use a film made specifically for glass.

Can you still tint the windshield with film on it?

They’re different products doing different jobs and they stack in a specific order. A 70% ceramic or Crystalline strip on the windshield cuts heat; protection film takes impacts. If you want both, tell us when you book — the order matters and we’ll sequence it properly rather than peeling something off later.

How long does windshield film last?

Plan on replacing it. That’s not a weakness, it’s the point — the film wears so the glass doesn’t. Life depends on how much highway you drive and how much sun it sits in; Colorado’s UV load is hard on everything. When it’s hazed, scratched or taken a hit, it comes off and a fresh one goes on, and the windshield under it is still the original.

Will film interfere with my rain sensor, camera or ADAS?

We cut around sensor and camera windows rather than filming over them. This is also the strongest argument for the film in the first place: on a car with cameras behind the glass, a replacement means recalibration on top of the glass cost. Keeping the original windshield avoids that whole bill.

Is this worth it on a normal daily driver?

Sometimes yes, often no, and we’d rather say so. If you’re on I-25 or Powers every day and you’ve already replaced a windshield, the math works. If you get a chip every couple of years, a $60 repair when it happens is the cheaper plan. We’ll tell you which one you are.

Why do exotic and flat windshields need this more?

Two reasons. Geometry: older supercars and a lot of exotics run nearly vertical glass, so a stone hits square instead of glancing off a rake. Supply: that glass often isn’t on a shelf anywhere in the country, it’s a special order measured in weeks, and the invoice has an extra digit. At that point the film isn’t the expensive part of the decision.

Can you repair a chip in glass that already has film on it?

The film comes off, we repair the chip properly to the ROLAGS standard, and new film goes on. We do both in the same shop, which is the reason to have one place handle it.

Do you install film on a brand new windshield?

That’s the best time to do it. New glass, zero existing damage, nothing to work around. If we’ve just replaced a windshield for you, filming it the same visit saves you a second trip.

How do I book windshield protection film?

Book online, or call (719) 517-7220 or text (719) 521-6992. We look at the glass before anything goes on it — if there’s an existing chip it gets repaired first. Film work is in shop at 2725 N Nevada Ave.

How long do you need the car?

Plan on most of a day. Film needs a clean, dust-free bay and controlled conditions, and we’d rather take the time than rush an edge. We’ll give you a window when you book.

Accreditation

Certified windshield repair. Tested to the standard.

National Windshield Repair Division Certified Windshield Repair Technician, a division of the Auto Glass Safety Council - ST6 Detailers, Colorado Springs

ST6 is a Certified Windshield Repair Technician through the National Windshield Repair Division — a division of the Auto Glass Safety Council.

That matters more than it sounds. The AGSC is the only body in auto glass backed by a published ANSI standard and an independent audit. Certification means passing their exam against ROLAGS — the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard — not buying a listing or finishing a vendor’s weekend course.

  • Credential NWRD Certified Windshield Repair Technician
  • Body National Windshield Repair Division, a division of the AGSC
  • Standard ANSI/AGSC/NWRD/ROLAGS 002-2022

It’s also why we’ll tell you when a chip shouldn’t be repaired. The standard sets limits, and we work to them.
