The before and after

One chip. Thirty minutes apart.

Bullseye windshield chip with star legs beside a quarter for scale, Colorado Springs

BEFORE

Flashing white

Under a quarter, so it repairs. That bright silver centre is air trapped in the break — it’s what catches your eye in the sun, and it’s what lets the legs run in a cold snap.

DURING

Resin under pressure

The break gets opened, vacuumed, then filled leg by leg until it stops reflecting.

AFTER

Stopped, not erased

Same break, filled. The white is gone because the air is gone. A faint mark stays — we won’t pretend otherwise, and that mark is the windshield you kept.

Doing glass since 1999

We’ve been fixing windshields for half our owner’s life.

Dana Starr registered his first auto glass company — StarrTec Auto Glass — in January 1999.

Then Florida, where he built and ran one of the busiest windshield replacement operations in the south of the state for five years. It closed for one reason, and it wasn’t the work: the insurers lobbied their way into setting their own pricing tiers, and the margin went out of replacement down there.

Twenty-seven years later we still do both — chip repair and full replacement, all of it in our own shop on North Nevada.

Every other shop you’ll find for this in Colorado Springs is one of two things: a glass shop with no story, or a detailer who added glass to the menu last year. We’re neither.

$60 for the first chip. $10 for each additional chip on the same windshield. That’s the whole price list.

Six of the nine shops ranking for this in Colorado Springs publish no prices at all. One says “most times we are the best quote.” We’d rather just tell you.

We’re more affordable than the shops around us, and that’s deliberate. We don’t build pricing around squeezing the maximum out of whoever walks in today. A windshield chip is a sixty-dollar job.

Know your chip. Most are repairable.

Long crack chip diagram

Long crack

Long cracks and damage in critical locations need an inspection; replacement may be needed.

Rule of thumb is damage up to about the size of a quarter. What needs a look first: cracks past roughly six inches, anything in the driver’s line of sight, damage at the glass edge, and chips somebody’s already put a hardware-store kit into.

The process

Thirty minutes. Done while you wait.

STEP 01

Prepare the break

Loose glass, dirt and moisture are removed before resin is introduced.

STEP 02

Remove trapped air

Professional repair equipment pulls air from the damaged area.

STEP 03

Inject repair resin

Resin is worked into suitable damage using controlled pressure.

STEP 04

Cure and finish

UV light cures the resin, and the impact point is finished flush.

STEP 04

Cured hard

UV sets the resin through the full depth of the break. You can see the star under the light — filled, and about to stop being a problem.

STEP 05

Polished flush

The surface is finished level with the glass, so your wipers pass clean over it instead of catching.

What we use

Professional resin. Not a parts-store kit.

We use professional windshield-repair products from Delta Kits and GlasWeld — the same equipment the trade runs, not the suction-cup kit from the auto parts aisle.

When a windshield is past repair and has to come out, the replacement glass comes from PPG, Pilkington and Safelite. We’re not a glass shop selling you a windshield off a shelf — we source what your specific vehicle takes and fit it here.

THE BRIDGE

Vacuum and pressure

THE RESIN

Matched to the break

Different breaks take different viscosities. A one-bottle kit can’t do that.

The honest bit

What a repair actually looks like afterward.

A repair stops the chip spreading and takes most of the glare out of it. A faint mark usually stays.

Anyone promising you it vanishes completely is setting you up to be disappointed, and that’s where one-star reviews come from. What you’re buying is structural: the break stops growing, and the windshield stays in the car instead of becoming a replacement bill.

WHAT YOU GET

Why not to wait

A chip in November is a crack in February.

A chip is a stress riser. The glass around it is already under load, and Colorado spends the winter testing it.

01

The temperature swing

Forty degrees between a frozen morning and a sunny afternoon. The glass moves, and the break moves with it.

Frost receding from a windshield at dawn in Colorado Springs

02

The defroster

Heat on full against frozen glass. Inner surface expands, outer hasn’t caught up. That’s when a star break runs — usually in the driveway.

03

The road

Traction grit on I-25 and Powers packs into an open break. Once it’s down in the legs, resin can’t fill it.

Sixty dollars now. A windshield later.

Questions

Windshield chip repair in Colorado Springs, answered.

How much is windshield chip repair in Colorado Springs?

$60 for the first chip and $10 for each additional chip on the same windshield. Chip repairs are customer-paid.

How long does a rock chip repair take?

About thirty minutes at our North Nevada shop. You wait, you drive away on it.

Can every rock chip be repaired?

Most of them. Bullseyes, half moons, star breaks and combination breaks up to roughly the size of a quarter repair well. Cracks past about six inches, damage in the driver’s line of sight, damage at the glass edge, or chips already filled with DIY resin need an inspection first.

Will the chip disappear completely?

No, and we won’t tell you otherwise. A repair stops the spread and takes most of the glare out, but a faint mark usually remains. The point is keeping the windshield in the car.

Does ST6 bill insurance for chip repairs?

No. Chip repairs at ST6 are customer-paid: $60 for the first chip and $10 for each additional chip on the same windshield.

Do you replace windshields?

Yes — in shop at 2725 N Nevada Ave. We’re not a glass retailer; we don’t sell you a windshield off a shelf. We source the glass for your specific vehicle from PPG, Pilkington and Safelite and install it here. Replacements are quoted after we look at the vehicle.

What brand of glass do you use for a replacement?

PPG, Pilkington and Safelite, depending on what your vehicle takes. Those are the same names supplying the national chains. Which one goes in yours depends on the vehicle, the features in the glass and what’s available — we tell you before we order.

Is windshield repair mobile or in shop?

Everything we do on glass is in shop, at 2725 N Nevada Ave in Colorado Springs. Chip repair needs a clean, dry, temperature-controlled break to bond properly, and a replacement needs controlled cure time. Both are done here.

What happens if I wait?

In Colorado, usually the chip spreads. Temperature swings, defroster heat against frozen glass, and winter road grit packing into the break all work against you. A contaminated break often can’t be repaired at all.

How do I book a windshield chip repair in Colorado Springs?

Call (719) 517-7220 or text (719) 521-6992. Walk-ins welcome. No appointment, deposit or hour’s notice required. Online booking is optional. We’re at 2725 N Nevada Ave, open 6am to 8pm Monday through Saturday and 8am to 6pm Sunday, and we’re staffed for repairs the whole time.

Do I need an appointment or can I just show up?

No appointment or hour’s notice is required. Walk in, book online if you prefer, or call or text for the fastest response. We keep a tech on repairs all day, so same-day is normal rather than a favor.

Do I have to leave the car?

No. A chip repair is about thirty minutes and you wait in our lobby. No loaner to arrange, no dropping it for the day, no second trip to pick it up. You drive away on the same windshield.

Can I use a DIY repair kit instead?

You can, and it’s the most common way a repairable chip becomes a replacement. The kits can’t pull a vacuum, so air stays trapped in the legs and the resin only partly fills. Once hardware-store resin has cured in a break, a professional repair usually can’t be done.

Accreditation

Certified windshield repair. Tested to the standard.

ST6 is a Certified Windshield Repair Technician through the National Windshield Repair Division — a division of the Auto Glass Safety Council.

That matters more than it sounds. The AGSC is the only body in auto glass backed by a published ANSI standard and an independent audit. Certification means passing their exam against ROLAGS — the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard — not buying a listing or finishing a vendor’s weekend course.
