DIY repair kits · the honest answer

Do windshield repair kits actually work?

Rarely, and the failure is usually permanent. A hardware-store kit can’t pull a vacuum, so the air trapped in the break never comes out and the resin only partly fills. The chip stays visible, it keeps spreading — and once that resin has cured in there, a professional repair generally can’t be done afterward. A $15 kit is the most common way a $60 repair becomes a windshield.

Why they fail

It’s the vacuum. That’s the whole thing.

A rock chip isn’t an empty hole. It’s a network of fractures with air trapped inside them — and that trapped air is what makes a chip flash white at you in the sun.

Getting resin in means getting the air out first. That takes a bridge clamped to the glass pulling an actual vacuum on the break, then cycling to pressure to force resin down every leg.

A suction-cup kit from the parts store has no vacuum stage. It presses resin at the surface and hopes. The resin caps the top of the break, seals the air inside, and cures.

What it actually costs you

Fifteen dollars, then a windshield.

STEP 01

The kit looks fine

It cures, it’s clear-ish, the chip looks a bit better. Most people call it a win here.

STEP 02

It spreads anyway

The air is still in there and so is the stress. First hard cold snap, the legs run.

STEP 03

Now nobody can fix it

Cured resin blocks the break. We can’t get ours in behind it. That’s a replacement.

We’re not being precious about this to sell you a repair. We charge $60. The kit saves you forty-five dollars and risks a windshield.

When a kit is fine

There is one honest case.

If the car is old, you don’t care how the glass looks, you’re never claiming on it, and you just want to slow a chip down before you sell it — a kit will do something. It’s better than nothing on a vehicle you’ve written off cosmetically.

For anything you actually drive and care about, the maths doesn’t work. Especially in Colorado, where the winter will find every unfilled leg in that break.

Questions

DIY windshield repair, answered.

Do windshield repair kits from the auto parts store work?

Rarely. They can’t pull a vacuum, so the air trapped in the break never comes out and resin only fills the top. The chip stays visible and keeps spreading.

Can a professional fix a chip after I’ve used a DIY kit?

Usually not. Once the kit’s resin has cured inside the break, professional resin has nowhere to go. This is the most common way a repairable chip becomes a replacement.

Why does a chip stay visible after a DIY repair?

Because the air is still in it. Trapped air is what reflects light and makes a chip flash white. If it wasn’t vacuumed out before the resin went in, it’s still there.

How much does a professional chip repair cost in Colorado Springs?

$60 for the first chip at ST6, $10 for each additional chip on the same windshield. With comprehensive insurance most carriers cover it with nothing out of pocket.

How do I book a windshield chip repair in Colorado Springs?

Call (719) 517-7220 or text (719) 521-6992. Walk-ins welcome. No appointment, deposit or hour’s notice required. Online booking is optional. We’re at 2725 N Nevada Ave, open 6am to 8pm Monday through Saturday and 8am to 6pm Sunday, and we’re staffed for repairs the whole time.

Do I need an appointment or can I just show up?

No appointment or hour’s notice is required. Walk in, book online if you prefer, or call or text for the fastest response. We keep a tech on repairs all day, so same-day is normal rather than a favor.

Do I have to leave the car?

No. A chip repair is about thirty minutes and you wait in our lobby. No loaner to arrange, no dropping it for the day, no second trip to pick it up. You drive away on the same windshield.

Is a DIY kit ever the right choice?

On a vehicle you’ve already written off cosmetically and will never claim on, it’s better than nothing. On anything you drive and care about, you’re risking a windshield to save about forty-five dollars.

How long do I have before a chip spreads?

In a Colorado winter, not long. Temperature swings, defroster heat against frozen glass, and road grit packing into the break all work against you.

Accreditation

Certified windshield repair. Tested to the standard.

National Windshield Repair Division Certified Windshield Repair Technician, a division of the Auto Glass Safety Council - ST6 Detailers, Colorado Springs

ST6 is a Certified Windshield Repair Technician through the National Windshield Repair Division — a division of the Auto Glass Safety Council.

That matters more than it sounds. The AGSC is the only body in auto glass backed by a published ANSI standard and an independent audit. Certification means passing their exam against ROLAGS — the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard — not buying a listing or finishing a vendor’s weekend course.

  • Credential NWRD Certified Windshield Repair Technician
  • Body National Windshield Repair Division, a division of the AGSC
  • Standard ANSI/AGSC/NWRD/ROLAGS 002-2022
  • What it covers Break identification, repair limits, and when a repair should not be attempted

It’s also why we’ll tell you when a chip shouldn’t be repaired. The standard sets limits, and we work to them.
